Location: Magpie Nest Group HQ
Employment Type: Full-Time (On-site)
Working Days: Monday to Friday (5 days per week)
Working Hours: 11:30 AM - 8:30 PM
Magpie Nest is a holding company with a portfolio of exciting ventures in the UK, USA, and Bangladesh. We're not your typical company – we're building our financial infrastructure to be robust, transparent, and highly compliant. As we grow our footprint in the UK, ensuring meticulous UK VAT compliance and maintaining flawless tax records is critical. We currently use Google Sheets, believing that a deep understanding of our operational needs must come before implementing off-the-shelf software. We need a passionate and skilled VAT professional to help us build foolproof tax-tracking systems and ensure our statutory compliance is always ahead of the curve.
This isn't just a basic data-entry role. You'll be a key partner to the core Finance team and the Group CEO, ensuring our business maneuvers are tax-efficient and fully compliant with the latest HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC) regulations. If you're ready to roll up your sleeves, manage our UK VAT landscape proactively, and have a significant impact, this is your opportunity.
Our Core Values (Alignment is Non-Negotiable):
- We strive for excellence and continuous improvement with great vision.
- We aim to grow together with loyalty, dedication, and a collective mindset.
- We value honest and direct communication.
What You’ll Do:
VAT Compliance & Systems Development:
- Design and implement scalable UK VAT tracking and reporting processes using Google Sheets (initially).
- Maintain accurate digital records to ensure full compliance with Making Tax Digital (MTD) rules.
- Ensure timely preparation, generation, and submission of UK VAT returns to HMRC.
- Help us map our VAT requirements for a future migration to an MTD-compatible ERP or accounting system.
Reporting & Analysis:
- Manage input and output VAT calculations, including standard, reduced, zero-rated, and exempt supplies.
- Oversee Postponed VAT Accounting (PVA) for imports and handle C79 certificates.
- Reconcile VAT control accounts with the general ledger balances regularly.
- Generate timely reports detailing our VAT liabilities, reclaims, and adjustments, monitoring partial exemption calculations if necessary.
Strategic & Regulatory Support:
- Act as the primary internal expert on HMRC regulations and handle any VAT audits, inquiries, or notices.
- Stay continuously updated on the latest UK VAT rules, HMRC guidance, and national tax policies.
- Advise management on the VAT implications for new business ventures, cross-border transactions, and procurement decisions.
- Collaborate with various departments to ensure all sales and purchase invoices meet strict UK compliance standards.
Responsibilities
- End-to-End VAT Compliance: Lead the preparation and submission of quarterly and monthly UK VAT returns through the Making Tax Digital (MTD) framework.
- Technical VAT Advisory: Manage complex VAT treatments, including Postponed VAT Accounting (PVA) for imports, the Reverse Charge mechanism for services, and zero-rated export documentation.
- Ledger & Control Account Reconciliation: Perform rigorous monthly reconciliations between Sales/Purchase ledgers and VAT control accounts; investigate and resolve any discrepancies in input or output tax.
- Audit Readiness & HMRC Liaison: Act as the primary point of contact for VAT-related inquiries. Maintain a clean "Audit Trail" and prepare comprehensive documentation for potential HMRC inspections.
- System Design & Logic: Assist in mapping tax codes and digital links for future ERP implementation, ensuring the system logic mirrors UK statutory requirements.
- Custom Reporting: Develop "unorthodox" reports in Google Sheets that track VAT liabilities in real-time and provide early warnings on cash flow impacts related to tax payments.
Technical Necessities
- Education: Bachelor’s/Master’s in Accounting or Finance. ACCA/CA/CIMA part-qualification is highly preferred.
- Experience: 2–4 years of experience specifically handling UK VAT. Candidates with experience in C79 certificates and EORI documentation will be prioritized.
